Introduce

4150 steel also sold under the name AISI/SAE 4150, is a medium/high-carbon alloy steel that contains chromium and molybdenum. 4150 steel is known for its increased hardenability and mechanical properties. The machinability of 4150 steel bar is better in the annealed form.  This tough steel alloy offers uniform strength, wear resistance, and great hardness. It is important to note that Alloy Steel 4150 must be heat-treated to be suitable for machining. The weldability of Alloy Steel 4150 is high and can be achieved through most commercial methods. The finest of grain size relates directly with the temperature of forging.

Application

Alloy Steel 4150 is used in the aerospace, defense, oil and gas, and automotive industries for products such as:

Shafts

Valves

Sprockets

Aerospace parts

Axles

Spindles

Forged gears

HEAT TREATMENT

Soft Annealing

Heat the steel  to 680-720°C uniformly and slowly

hold suitable time for the steel to be thoroughly heated

cool slowly in furnace

maximum Brinell hardness of 248.

Normalizing: 840-860°C,cool in air

Hardening:820 – 860°C,oil quench

Tempering:540-680°C,cool in air

HARDNESS AFTER HEAT TREATMENT

Annealed at 815°C: 197 HB

Normalized at 870°C: 321 HB

Oil quenched, fine grained, tempered at 205°C: 530 HB

Oil quenched, fine grained, tempered at 315°C: 495 HB
